Its December, which means it’s the holiday season! Are you planning to go on a road trip? Then you will be hitting the highways. Travelling on highways means you have to pay tolls. Usually, we stop at the toll gate and pay through cash. In this digital era, everything is online, and payments are also cashless. So, the Government of India has decided to digitize the toll plazas across the country by introducing FASTag. FASTag enables automatic toll collection at electronic toll collection gates.
What is FASTag?
In simple terms, FASTag is an electronic wallet which enables automatic deduction of toll charges when you pass through an electronic toll collection gate. FASTag employs Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology, and the tag is affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle after the tag account is activated. FASTag is linked to a prepaid account, from which the toll charges are deducted.
With FASTag, there is no need to stop at the toll gate, as the toll charges will be automatically deducted as the vehicle approaches the electronic toll collection gate. So, the continuous flow of traffic through the toll plazas will save time as there is no need to stop for cash payment.
Is FASTag mandatory?
Yes, FASTag is mandatory from January 15, 2020. Even after the deadline, toll plazas across the country will be equipped with one hybrid lane which will accept cash payments, but there is a catch. Vehicles without FASTag will be charged twice the standard toll charge after January 15, 2020. So, ensure that you get the FASTag account activated and attached to your vehicle’s windscreen before the deadline.
Advantages of FASTag
- FASTag saves time and fuel as the toll charge is automatically deducted. There is no need to stop the vehicle to pay cash.
- Users will receive SMS alerts on the registered mobile number and email for all the transactions done through the FASTag account.
- User can recharge the FASTag account online through any digital payment modes.
- FASTag eliminates the worry of carrying exact cash to pay tolls.
